AMERICAN
BOARD OF COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY

CERTIFICATION
AREAS
~
To be certified by the
American
Board of Counseling
Psychology (ABCoP),
candidates are examined in one of five practice
areas of their own choosing. This choice applies to
both the "regular" and "senior" examination
options. Three of these are new areas approved by
the ABCoP at its December, 2006 meeting. The fourth
has been around for several years but is still
relatively new. To support these new choices and
encourage applicants, the Academy has agreed to
refund the cost of the application and practice
sample submission fees, up to $500.00 per
candidate! (For specifics, see below.)
The five practice areas
accepted for examination purposes are:
- Counseling and
Psychotherapy (assessment and intervention
of mental health issues). [This is the
"traditional" practice area.]
- Consultation
(Consultation in clinical, educational,
governmental, employment and/or other
professional settings). [Scholarship may
apply.]
- Career and Vocational
Intervention (assessment and intervention in
occupation and employment issues). [NEW
practice area and scholarship may
apply.]
- Mental Health and/or
Academic Administration/Management
(Program development, management and
administration in counseling, governmental and
academic settings). [NEW practice area and
scholarship may apply.]
- Teaching and
Supervision (clinical supervision and/or
teaching of professional counseling skills).
[NEW practice area and scholarship may
apply.]
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!
The American Academy of Counseling Psychology
is making scholarships available to the first TEN
(10) applicants for Board certification who are
examined in any of the three new areas (Career and
Vocational Intervention, Mental Health and/or
Academic Administration/Management ,Teaching and
Supervision) as well as a fourth area, the
relatively new area of Consultation. Upon
successful completion of the Board certification
process, the Academy will refund the fees
associated with the first two of the three steps
toward certification (the initial application and
the practice sample review), up to a total of
$500.00 per candidate. When combined with the fact
that successful candidates can also earn a minimum
of 6 CEs for the certification process itself and 3
CEs for AACoP's free ethics module (an excellent
review prior to the oral examination), Board
certification pays for itself!
Special note to V.A.
psychologists: Federal legislation has recently
been enacted that allows a significant pay raise
for those V.A. psychologists who become
Board-certified by ABPP.
