AMERICAN
ACADEMY OF COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY
~
HISTORY
~
The American Board of Professional Psychology
(ABPP) was incorporated in 1947 with the support of
the American Psychological Association. The
American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP)
serves the public by providing oversight in
certifying psychologists as competent to deliver
high quality services in various specialty areas of
psychology. Board certification, or the awarding of
a Diploma by a specialty Board of ABPP, assures the
public that specialists designated by ABPP have
successfully completed the educational, training,
and experience requirements of the specialty,
including an examination designed to assess the
competencies required to provide quality services
in that specialty. The American Board of
Professional Psychology (ABPP) is the governing
body of separately incorporated specialty examining
boards. ABPP assures the establishment,
implementation, and maintenance of specialty
standards and examinations by each of its member
boards.
The American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP)
is one of the original specialties recognized in
1947 when the American Board of Professional
Psychology (ABPP) was founded. The ABCoP
establishes both qualifications for Board
Certification in Counseling Psychology and
procedures for conducting the review of
credentials, practice samples and the oral
examinations in Counseling Psychology. The ABCoP is
governed by a board composed of members certified
in Counseling Psychology and representative of the
specialty on a national basis. Board Certification
in Counseling Psychology assures the public and the
profession that the Counseling Psychologist has
successfully completed the education, training, and
experience requirements of the specialty including
an examination designed to assess competencies
necessary to provide quality services in Counseling
Psychology.
In the early 1990's ABPP recognized the need for
the establishment of Specialty Academies for each
area of professional specialty practice. Specialty
Academies were envisioned to play a role in
providing professional fellowship, continuing
education, advocacy activities, improvements in
quality and accessibility of services in the
specialty areas, participation in Specialty Board
examinations, and participation in the selection
process of Specialty Board members.
The American Academy of Counseling Psychology
(AACoP) was established in this context in 1993.
Originally chartered as the Academy of Counseling
Psychology, the Academy's name formally changed to
the American Academy of Counseling Psychology
(AACoP) in 2003. Since the establishment of the
Academy, essential elements of Academy
responsibilities have included: advancement of
Counseling Psychology as a science and practice;
dissemination of information to the public,
professional organizations and universities
concerning the specialty of Counseling Psychology;
encouragement of Board Certification in Counseling
Psychology by ABCoP; and advocacy on behalf of the
interests of Board Certified Counseling
Psychologists. The American Psychological
Association (APA) approved the American Academy of
Counseling Psychology (AACoP) as a sponsor of
continuing education for psychologists in
2001.
