The
following information is made available to you by the
American Academy of Counseling Psychology about
psychologists who are Board Certified Diplomates in
the Health Service Specialty of Counseling Psychology of the
American Board of Professional Psychology and
Fellows of the Academy.
The
American Board of Professional Psychology has
credentialed professional psychologists in the practice
areas of applied psychology for fifty years, and the Board
Certification of this board is still the highest level of
certification in professional psychology recognized by the
American Psychological Association.
The
American Academy of Counseling Psychology strives to
maintain the highest standards of professional training,
ethical conduct and excellence in the delivery of clinical
and applied psychological services. The Academy was founded
to advance this purpose by the Board Certified Diplomates in
the Health Service Specialty of Counseling Psychology of the
American Board of Professional Psychology.
The
credentialing process of becoming a Fellow in the American
Academy of Counseling Psychology gives and assurance
of the very best, most current, ethical, legally
responsible psychological services because these
psychologists have:

|
- completed
a doctoral degree that usually takes a
minimum of five years to complete after
finishing an undergraduate education, (Admission
to such a doctoral program is extremely
competititve and requires demonstrated academic
excellence.),
|
|
|
- completed
one year full-time supervised internship
in the practice of applied counseling and
clinical skills usually including the making of
individual, group and community interventions
for emotional, behavioral, vocational, family
and couple problems using preventative,
developmental and psychotherapeutic approaches
in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of
both psychopathology and the broad range of
normal problems in living,

|
|
- completed
a minimum of one additional year of
supervised professional experience,
|
|
|
- completed
a minimum of three years of post-doctoral
experience, and
|
|
|
- been
granted a license to practice psychology
independently in at least one state,
|
|
|
- passed
a thorough credentials review by the
American Board of Professional Psychology. All
training, must have met the standards set by the
American Psychological Association,
|
|
|
- had
samples of the actual work, live or video
taped evaluated by a group of nationally
recognized, Board Certified Diplomates of the
American Board of Professional Psychology (most
other credentialing bodies do not require the
viewing of live work samples.)
|
|
|
- passed
a lengthy and rigorous oral examination by a
group of Board Certified Diplomates of the
American Board of Professional Psychology
covering theoretical, technical, ethical, legal,
research and professional issues in the practice
of applied psychology,
|
|
|
- joined
the American Academy of Counseling
Psychology, as a Fellow of the Academy after
becoming eligible upon completing all of the
above qualifications.
